Ice hockey star Wayne Gretzky famously said, “I skate to where the puck is going, not to where it’s been.” The quote has long been used by business leaders to sum up the importance of a future-focused approach. To extend the hockey metaphor, the ability to pivot in any direction can change the game.

How does a future-focused approach lead to success? We posed the question to Dia Nichols, a health care executive, business strategist, and solutions-driven inclusive leader who has a seasoned understanding of how to pivot to opportunities for growth.

Dia, your way in business is always to think, look, and act forward, analyzing emerging trends within and beyond health care to ignite company growth. Talk to us about your process.

I’ve always adhered to the wisdom that “you can’t argue with the data.” Whatever business you’re in, keeping a close watch on statistics and following your industry’s trends are key to understanding where you need to go next.

For example, in the health care industry, the trends tell us the future is outside of inpatient care. The pendulum is swinging toward outpatient care. In response, we’re partnering with our physicians to build outpatient ambulatory surgery centers. We know, too, that health care is moving in the direction of promoting well-being rather than responding to illness. In the years ahead, providers will be paid for keeping patients healthy and out of the hospital and for maintaining patient wellness. As a result, we’re shifting our business model to focus on building wellness solutions that help people ‘find their healthy place.’

Another trend we’re following is health care consumerism — a growing patient empowerment that enables people to access care on their terms, at they’re convenience.

Expanded options are particularly vital for consumers who don’t have a primary care physician. They can go into a Walmart or Target for tests and other health care services. We asked ourselves, how can we become a part of that trend and provide convenient options for consumers? In Chicago, we’ve formed relationships with some of the ‘big-box’ companies like Walgreens and provided onsite clinics that will meet consumers where they are and help grow our consumer base.

A forward-thinking mindset applies to any industry, and it’s an ongoing process. Track your industry’s trends. Lean on data analysis. Consult with outside industry experts. Develop new business lines to meet the future need — and craft your competitive positioning. Skate, always, to where the puck is going.

We appreciate your insights, Dia.
