Hire Smarter - Susan Poeton
We are all cautiously optimistic that the worst of the pandemic is behind us. Which doesn’t mean things are all going back to pre-pandemic normal.
For manufacturers, pre-pandemic normal was challenging enough. A few years ago, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that some 2.4 million manufacturing jobs would go unfulfilled by the close of the 2020s.
The good news so far is that according to current government employment statistics, manufacturing added 53,000 jobs in March. The news that we at Industry Today are reporting is that if manufacturing is to attract talent in a highly competitive post-pandemic labor market, industry needs to reexamine and readjust its recruiting strategies.
As Jobvite Marketing Communications Manager Amber Ferrari points out “Ways Manufacturing Can Hire Smarter,” recruiters need to improve how they communicate with prospective candidates. Text messaging is the tool to achieve that objective.
Any of you have kids? Ever try to get them on the phone? Parents learn pretty quickly that if they want to get a hold of their teenager, use text messaging.
Okay, maybe I’m generalizing a bit (but not much). People under 30 tend to rely on text messaging as their primary mode of communication. So should recruiters. As Ferrari notes, “Text recruiting via a fully integrated platform enables recruiters to quickly source and assess candidates at scale. The advantages are evident, with 98% of mobile recruiting texts having a successful open rate. In comparison, the open rate for emails is just 20%.”
