Robot-assisted surgery has emerged as a groundbreaking advancement in the field of medicine, combining the precision of robotic technology with the expertise of skilled surgeons. It has revolutionized the way complex surgical procedures are performed and has become increasingly important in modern healthcare.

Recently, Steven Maurice Clark, an award-winning general and bariatric surgeon, shared his insight on robot-assisted surgery and its importance and relevance in healthcare today.

Here is what Steven had to say —

Healthcare is constantly evolving to deliver better patient outcomes. Surgical robotics is one of the most exciting developments today. Laparoscopy or minimally invasive surgeries is the current standard for most procedures such as appendectomies, gastric bypass, and removal of small tumors.

Robotic surgery is the next step forward and where the surgeon operates by controlling robotic arms that manipulate the surgical instruments. A myriad of benefits come with surgical robotics. Robotic-assisted surgery empowers the surgeon to make delicate and precise motions with surgical tools beyond what can usually be accomplished laparoscopically. The surgeon also has a magnifying, high-resolution view of an operating area and they are sitting down comfortably and using ergonomic controls. These controls reduce the fatigue that comes from performing surgery. After all, the robot never gets tired. Each of these outcomes leads to better patient outcomes and also for the position. Robotic surgery is not yet the standard care for laparoscopic procedures but more and more doctors are being trained to use robotics.

Looking forward, this tool could revolutionize healthcare through remote surgery. There is a concern about the need for more trained surgeons for instance small town hospitals could outsource specialized surgical care to more experienced surgeons in a major city or a major medical center if necessary. Also, doctors in a residency could have access to these expert surgeons.

Thanks for that interesting insight, Steven.
