“Today, organizations are looking to diversify their boards’ composition and enlist leaders with expertise in digital platforms and customer experience — a shift that could present director opportunities for marketers.”

When I stumbled upon an article from The Wall Street Journal, Why Marketers Are a Valuable Addition to the Board by Jennifer D. Fisher, I found her points about the impact marketers can make when they are brought onto board positions very interesting.

As CMO and CXO of Party City, and Board Director, I understand the importance of having marketers on boards. Diversity of thought on boards -encompassing all stakeholders in a company -is essential. This article did a good job of covering all aspects that marketers can contribute to a board - leading to higher productivity and a broader perspective.

  • A wider scope
  • Diversity
  • Agenda for action

As a leader, I believe in setting a vision that is audacious, and transformative, that gets people excited and makes them feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves. From my experience, many of the elements of leading a team within a company also apply when being a board member — it’s always the quality and commitment of people that lead to the best results.

Marketing drives product awareness, cultivates brand credibility, builds trust among your target buyers, and provides value to your audience in the form of information, entertainment, and inspiration. Put those all together, and you get sales. In today’s society, only marketers know how to spread the word and what to do to achieve maximum efficiency in gaining brand awareness.

My own career has seen its share of transformations. Whether it’s making an idea come to life, or seeing a more diverse organization, it is an opportunity to advance strategic procedures such as digital transformation and customer acquisition while increasing board effectiveness through greater diversity.
